Eman GrimaEman Grima

(b.1951) is one of Malta’s major twentieth-century painters, yet much of his work has remained little known to a wide public. As the first retrospective of his career, this exhibition aims to be both milestone and revelation. Indeed, thanks to the generosity and enthusiasm of those who have collected and owned his work, are assembled here a significant selection of his total output as an artist. His artistic career - starting from an early age, through the sixties at Secondary level and the School of Art (Malta) and the Academia Pietro Vanucci (Perugia) in the seventies and the body of works he produced during the past forty years -  unfolds through the show, a distinctive survey exhibition of his work.

Jeannot KuenzelJeannot Kuenzel

(b. 1982) born in Berlin, Germany, he has produced a great oeuvre of photographic artworks. He undertook studies at Brookhaven College (Dallas) and in photography and media design at the Freie Akademie der bildenden Kuenste (Essen). Though it is a small selection of his artwork, one can grasp the great talent this photographer has.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

The first time I exhibited my works in an art gallery was in 1969, at the Malta Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce. It was a collective youth exhibition organized by this Society.  On that occasion three of my works, a collage, and two drawings, received a special mention from the exhibition judges.

That exhibition showed just how important and influential it is for young artists to be able to show their work to others and eventually feel confident enough to pursue an artistic career, as it has been for me.

Since then, my artistic career spanned a forty-year period, culminating in this retrospective exhibition and eventually taking place at the same venue where it all started.

For this very special event I am exhibiting a selection of works that cover a variety of styles, media and themes, as my creations have evolved over these forty years.

It is a time of reflection and, looking back, my output and effort have been quite extensive. It was also a thrilling, gratifying and challenging experience.

For this special occasion I have invited Jeannot Kuenzel, a young German photographer, to participate in this exhibition with his original artwork. Consequently, one has the opportunity to enjoy the artistic output of two generations from two different cultures that still have a lot in common.

The exhibition is going to be held at the Malta Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce, Palazzo De La Salle, 219 Republic Street, Valletta from the 27th March to the 18th April 2009. Entrance is free.
